Belt and chute sorters are not interchangeable choices. The better structure depends on how the garlic moves, how much of its surface must be inspected, what foreign material is present and how the machine will connect to the existing line.

Start with the garlic, not the machine catalogue

Garlic may arrive as whole bulbs, peeled cloves, unpeeled cloves or broken pieces. These forms do not behave the same way during feeding. Some flow freely through a narrow channel, while others roll, overlap or change direction.

Before comparing suppliers, describe the material clearly. Include size range, moisture, dust, surface condition, fragility and the percentage of broken pieces. These factors often have more influence on the practical result than the name of the sorter.

When a chute sorter may be suitable

A chute sorter is generally considered for free-flowing products that can move through a narrow inspection path with relatively stable spacing. It may suit small or regular garlic pieces when the target defect is a visible color or surface difference.

The advantage is a compact, direct flow through the inspection area. The limitation is that rolling pieces and unstable orientation may reduce the amount of surface presented to the cameras. A chute test should therefore check how consistently the actual garlic travels through the viewing zone.

When a belt sorter may be preferable

A belt-based sorter provides a more controlled transport surface. It may be considered when garlic pieces are irregular, fragile or difficult to keep evenly spaced in a chute. The belt can also make it easier to manage the inspection path when the product needs more stable presentation.

However, a belt system may require more installation space and a different feeding arrangement. It should not be selected automatically simply because it offers more control. The product test still determines whether the additional structure creates a meaningful benefit.

Which defects are you trying to remove?

The decision also depends on the target. Stones, roots, stems, soil pieces and moldy garlic may have different visual contrasts. If the target is a large foreign object, mechanical cleaning may be needed before optical sorting. If the target is a subtle surface defect, camera visibility and product orientation become more important.

When the choice is difficult, compare belt and chute configurations using the same garlic and the same evaluation method. Review foreign material remaining in accepted product, good garlic entering the reject stream, feeding stability and the amount of manual recheck required.

Testing easy material in one machine and difficult material in another creates a misleading comparison. The sample should represent the product that will actually run during the busiest season.
